Propeller needed...

Firstly,

Thanks to Geoff for making it possible to post here.. his generosity to us exceeds his good looks.

Finally,

I've managed to scrape some cash together for a replacement prop for G2066 - aka the 'Flaxinator'.

I'd like to know if anyone has a prop for sale - it has to suit a Subi 'gyrobits' [Ric Douglas] belt redrive. It had a 72 x 44" left hand timber air screw on it [Turns clock-wise when viewed from the front] c/- Jack Allen before I manilla foldered it. It has a 100mm PCD x 6 M8 bolt pattern. I am looking for a similar set up with say a 68 ~ 72" prop that is pitch adjustable. I will need all the bits to bolt it up, so if you have a complete one to sell please let me know via return post here or phone me on 0418811953.

Failing that I'll just have to scrape up a little more and buy new from bolle or warp or whoever... any recommendations here - subi EA81 with 2.2:1 reduction?

Update 26/1/2008 - Daryl was considering getting a gearbox for his new EJ22 in lieu of his existing belt drive which required work to adapt it, he was considering a swap with me for a new 3 blade right hand air screw with me on a WD 3 Blade 72" left hand air screw [I buy the RH and he swaps it with me for the LH one he has] - Any ideas on how much they cost? I'm happy to consider new for new on this basis.

I wonder how sonny got on with his propeller building effort..

Thanks,

Nick.

Talking Re: Propeller needed...

Time to fess up, now that it has arrived!

After very much consideration I decided to get a warp drive prop - Left hand 3 blade with a HP Hub - no spinner.

It cost me $948 Aussie Dollars delivered to my doorstep. It came almost ready to bolt onto my gyro - it needs a flange backing plate though, which will be easy enough to knock up if the one off my timber prop does not fit.

I found the dealings with Ron from Hoverhawk to be straight forward and he answered all my enquiries in a timely fashion.

The prop was on its way to me at the 13th of Feb and here on the 18th, but it went to the post office on the 18th because I wasn't at home to receive it.

I would have preferred to go to timber but for the price factor - timber props cost as much as a c/f prop these days, in fact they cost more - none of the ones I was quoted was less than $1000 and delivery would have been extra. To boot timber props are not pitch adjustable for cruise or climb performance, they tend to be fatter and maybe less efficient. This means I will have to be even more careful to avoid a rollover as if one occurs there is a much greater chance of damage to the engine and redrive.

So now it is just a matter of grabbing my Gyro, fixing all the things that need to be fixed and then testing everything thoroughly, getting it inspected by our resident T/A and then going for a fly.. maybe, but I'll have to stick to some ground work first.

So, yeehaa! It's back in to the air if I dare.. :>>

Cheers,

Nick.

Thumbs up Re: Propeller needed...

At Mitch's suggestion I asked Tennessee Propellers Inc for a price for a timber price - it's not too bad at all...

Here's the link to their site:

Mr. Tomlin,
2.25? thick 72? x 44? Left Hand propeller with a bolt pattern of 6 x 8mm
x 100mm with Uralite leading edge protection.
Cost for this prop as described is:
$ 419.00 for propeller
$ 55.00 for Uralite
$ 192.00.shipping to Australia

Total cost $ 666.00
Thank you and we hope we can help you.
Steve, TN Propeller

The shipping cost for something that weighs as little as 20lbs or 6kg as does my warp drive is a total shocker!! In this instance it is nearly half the price of the prop itself, still, if I had to get it myself it would cost the better part of $2k for a return ticket.. I just wonder why it is so costly to freight something weighing 6kg from the states - something this weight would cost $15 from here to Melbourne, but there is probably a horribly large amount of paperwork involved, if Mark Bredden's experience with Customs is anything to go by that is the likely source of the difficulty, but we do have to protect our borders.

Cheers,

Nick.
