Rotor Tales and Short StoriesIf you've out herdin beef or just flown the trip of your life, or you just fly for the heck of it .... give us all the story in here!!
Heres the story to date, bin reading the forums for a while as well as Bergen abbot’s books about a thousand times, till I could stand it no longer and bought a gyro last year even if I really couldn’t afford it, cleaned it up a bit and then it sat in the shed waiting for the day I could get some instruction.
One day after putting the freshly painted and reinforced tail on I decided to charge the battery and warm it up before dropping the oil and flushing the radiator out, while it was still up on its trailer.
Well as if starting it wasn’t nerve racking enough, with all these ideas running through my head about broken hands or getting bound up in the prop. Sure as shit it fired up and I realised it didn’t have much throttle so I reached across and gave her a bit.
There I was hanging on to a gyro hitting full noise trying to get back to the throttle while we go scooting across the bay in the shed until jockey pulley jams, hangs a right and sends the draw bar of the trailer into one of the posts at the front of the shed. “Thank Christ for that” I swore as the cruiser was on the other side of the post. The wind from the prop blew tools and shit everywhere and even knocked a poor old ag bike over.
Flick herd the noise and came out to see what I was doing and pissed her self when she seen the look on my face as I told her the story.
So I gave her a service (the gyro boys, i gave flick a service later...), took her of the trailer before I decided id take her for a spin, without the rotors on of course. I got the couple of bits of angle iron, attached to a rope for pulling out of the road after you jump in, got her started, climbed in pulled the chocks up and threw them away and of I go. Well furgk me I was in trouble I went every witch way, just missed the house yard fence went straight past the end of the air strip and pulled up inches from the road sign, not for good management either, but as I went through some big holes in the ground the nose wheel assembly gave way and bent up under the front. So I pushed her back in to the shed and took bout 4 months till I got round to fixing it up, about two days ago.
So I had it sitting there ready to go. After tying her (the gyro) to the post at the front of the shed. I ran her for a while to blow the cob webs out and decided Id try it again. I stuck a bit of steel in front of the far wheel, my boot in front of the near one, pulled the prop jumped up and strapped my self in. all I had to do was press the right rudder pedal and give here some juice to get over the chock on the left and I’d be on my way, I thought!
Well I’ve ridden horses and bikes since I was little. Even stepped across some feral old ponies here and there and bulls when mum wasn’t looking. But nothing could prepare me for the feeling of insignificance I was about to experience!!
Talk about a rocky ned, she bucked, farted, droped its head, before rearing it back again, turned when I didn’t want it to and wouldn’t when I did. Sent me nearly into the house yard fence and I only stayed on past the power pole cuss I was strapped in!!! I pried my grip of the stick [that was real usefull without rotors on] hit the key and prayed before coming to a halt near the same old sign, took a breath and decided to give myself some room by pointing it down the air strip for another go.
I used some old dry cow shit for chocks, lit err up and I was off again. But… every time I wanted to steer, it’d argue and when I was in trouble and backed off shed just go straight, I quickly worked out that I needed gas for steering but to much and I was really scooting across the paddock. was getting the knack, when she started surging and stuffing my steerin up. I ended up bouncing off the strip across the road and just pulled up near a barbed wire fence. All the while flick has come out of the house in her cleaning clothes (jocks and a work shirt) and is taking pics of this whole saga.
Well I was nearly gunner give in and was pushing her home, When I noticed air in the fuel lines wich explained the surging. so I put her on the strip pointing home, let the pumps, pump as much fuel as they could and thought id save myself some pushing as I was confident I was going to be in a bit more control this time. mmmmm...
I hurried a bit jumping in, thinking I was going to run out of fuel soon and took off before I could get both feet on the pedals!!! Cut a big arc around chasing a screaming woman across the paddock over current bush, across the road and back to within inches of that bloody fence again!!!
So I pushed it back to the shed.
flick asked me when i was gonna put the rotors on? i told her i was gonna do it that night and go for some hops toomorow before askin her, why? she just calmly said 'it looks cute without them' and i had to laugh!!!
Don’t know if any one was interested I reading this but its rainin and I thought it was a laugh telling a mate about it last night. the last run i had was recorded on video and it is a crack up to watch!!

no worries russ, ill try to keep the old nag hobbled in the shed.
just got a helmet, 6200, mike & ear piece i think it will work a treat. rb communications is makin me a little amp to run a big f#r(ken speaker off my little mp3 player as small as a match box. it will have a socket for another ear plug, so i can groove alonge too.
gonna pull all the instruments out of the pod and make another one a bit smaller that will let my legs past it and put some leather holders on it for the radio,mp3 player and pliers. was puttin off moving the pedals forward but i found a frayed cable so ill do that too.
might put a spotty on too, so the wallabies know to clear out if im commin in late, he he.
that should keep her hobbled for another day or two.
hoody
p.s. hey birdy where is the best place to carry some wire on a gyro??
Re: Ok Russ I think im ready for some lessons know!!!
Around your waist maybe, then again you could make up an "A" frame thingo, from your axle keel back towards the nose area, sort of triangulated.....1 each side, then put a bit of that alloy security mesh on as a base to stack and tie things onto......got em on me 2 seater, works a treat............russ

Russ, Are you looking after my gyro.... you know the one you got from Canberra???? Don't go putting too many hours on it. I may have to come up there and pick it up. This sitting in the office chair and making brmmm brmmmm noises is getting on the wife's nerves. She mentioned I was one sick puppy and threatened to call the vet. Now being the dangerous type, I looked her in the eye and said" Why, is your broom stick feeling ill?" You know sex has never been the same...... God I miss it.
