Bones, you could give Tim McClure a ring, I remember 10 years ago, they were talking hydralic and it never went anywhere.
Could save you time. But good to see someone working away as it is a good way to go providing its weight efficient and is very reliable.

One more dumb idea .Have you thought of using a hydro gear type of pump? Then you would not need to run a clutch. The pump unit runs at up to 3600 rpm at 1000 psi at 20.5 lpm for the small unit . It weighs about 3.5 kg I have some kicking around in my work shop give me a call for more info .

but that would mean that you would have the extra drag of a pump running all the time to take HP away from the prop,, or am i missing something??
I'm listening to any ideas at the moment, that electric clutch you had, what sort of weight does it have though?? weight is our enemy, thats the problem..

Re: hydraulic Prerotator

Hi Bones,

Can you or any of the other members tell me what HP (ballpark?) is needed to spin up the rotors to a take-off speed. I've been following the discussions on the various types of drive units in the forum and I am contiplating a jump take-off for the Scorpion Tarctor Gyro.

Scorpion.

Re: hydraulic Prerotator

Generaly speakin, you need 3.5 hp to get the rotors up to take off speed.
If your goin for jump takeoff, you'll need too double that, but alot depinds on the gear ratio up top.
Hope this helps a little.

Sonny

Re: hydraulic Prerotator

Thanks Sonny,
I was looking at using a 10HP engine mounted in place of an electric prerotor,so I think it will be enough. Should come in at about 4kg.
