Re: Where Can I Get My Hub Bar Tested In Sydney

Gidday Ross,

I am unaware of a company in SYD that will do the testing required by the AD. Further, we negotiated a deal through the metallurgists in Perth at $100 per test plus postage, around $15.

I know a member had his done by an approved firm in Brisbane, but it cost him around $250.

I can probbly locate an approved inspection station in SYD if you still want to go down that path.

Regards,

Waddles

Hi Ross,

I am pretty sure the guys at 'Helimuster' at Warnervale (Central Coast) are a CASA approved testing agency..... If you give them a call on 0243522222 and ask for Peter Laughton or John Cunningham they should be able to help you out....

You will have to explain the details and maybe flick them a copy of the AD but I know for sure they have the gear etc (All my screw drivers are magnetised because we were bored one day.... )

If you have trouble getting hold of them, go through 'Heli-Aust' at Bankstown (02) 9791 0322... same company, different name, ask for Phil Dale. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Hope this helps

Paul

Another avenue, check out civil companies doing the same thing, usually under the heading of
"Non destructive testing". Have found these guys to be a lot cheaper, same tests. Cost me $165 last time.
Aero guys were near double that.

Hi Russ,

Yeah I was thinking the same, but after reading the AD it seemed pretty clear they wanted CASA approved guys doing it....... not sure that there would be any difference in the results mind you.

Re: Where Can I Get My Hub Bar Tested In Sydney

I'm fairly sure that a "civil" test by a certified company would be more than adequate.

A "demand" by asra to only use "casa approved" might be a tad &^%$#@ overkill. The "certification" of a company to do these type tests should be it.

Aero company testing would be near the cost of throwing it away, and just getting a new bar. [ Especially after 99.9% of bars would be tested defect free ]. Testing for cracks, yes good call.

Maybe we could get feedback from the asra guys who frequent here. [ management guys ]

Don't worry, your preaching to the converted on this one. Mining companies have as much... if not more to lose with regards to metal fatigue/testing etc as we do in the sport aviation field. A civil testing agency would more than be adequate for the job. Having said that, if they service the mining industry then their prices can be a little exhorborent... exhorbarant... exhorb.... expensive.

Cos I work in the Aviation industry, I tend to take it for granted that an AD is law and to go against it is not acceptable... if this is different to the ASRA model then this could get interesting.

The AD requires a CASA approved testing station. An AD is there to be followed to the letter. A great deal was made for you guys with the company in WA at $100, plus postage. Where is the problem!?!?

One problem is that some members who have said they will not get their hub bars tested are actually saying that they would rather [will] get a new hub bar than pay $100 plus postage to get a hub bar tested when the test can only determine if a crack has already started. There is no guarantee that a crack will not develop after an hours flying where as a new hub bar SHOULD be good for the relevant hours.
