Partial powered rotors

I interested in large diameter rotors and they will not be able to be hand started. A pre-rotater is a must but what about partial powered rotors? Are these systems worth the weight and complexity? I have read they have some benefits as to performance. I would like to hear the pros and cons from the forum.

Many thanks,

joe

Re: Partial powered rotors

Joe, I started a thrtead on the US forum a few days ago asking about the problems associated with the rotor system to cruise at higher speeds.

The thread is now discussing partially powered rotors. http://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12312

Re: Partial powered rotors

Thanks Paul,

Another question is how is it set-up? How does it(engine) sit on the post? Is it belt or chain driven? I quess I understand the "why it works" (theory) but I wondering "how it works" ( application)?

The U.S. forum was mostly theory and pretty short on how. I'm new at gyros and not equiped with a vast background as are you and Chuck Beaty. These are, I know, very basic questions but I need to ask them.

Many thanks,

joe

Re: Partial powered rotors

Paul,

I just got off of the U.S. forum and they (Dennis F.) referred to a variable torque clutch. It would drive the rotor during flight throughout a gyro's rrpm range. Is this clutch available off the shelf or do you have to build it? I also read in another thread where only 15 hp can be used before you need additional rudder area(torque issue).

I have been in my workshop today trying to make a model of a simple swash plate and how to get the pitch links by the partial power engine and still be able to rotate. I'm making it out of wood so changes can be done quickly. I'll let you know how it comes out in the next few days.

Did you see Chuck B. info on vibration reduction...that also gave me some ideas to play with. Well, my glue should be dry now... still working on the wooden blades!

Re: Partial powered rotors

I am not much help to you at all Joe. Sorry.

Although I am interested in it, this area has not yet piqued my interest enough to research it, so I will rely on you to do that Joe.

Aussie Paul.
