Re: Unsafe practices.. camera toting idiots flying gyros
Good comments.. they are about me... I think there are many valid points and would never think of telling anyone that they should say anything negative, because it's all good criticism. With that said... here's what I posted on the US forum PRIOR to posting the River run video...
US FORUM:
"Here's why I am posting this before I finish and post the video.... As a filmmaker, I scout and choose angles and ideas that make the project I am working on as impact-full and energetic as I can. As an example. I use a long lens while flying through a row of trees (that may be 50-100 feet apart), giving the illusion that I barely fit.. or fly over water with LZs within (non-visible) glide accessibility from the cameras perspective. I may not always show the safe landing areas that litter the land that I fly in and my air speed is always fast. I take my flying very serious and I am extremely careful. I am not a complacent pilot. I scout and do high dry runs before we even pull out the camera to shoot.
However, please feel free to comment and speak your mind, just please be aware of my position and know that MY GOAL IS TO MAKE IT LOOK EXCITING, FAST AND EVEN A BIT DANGEROUS through the magic of cameras and editing."
Cheers and safe flying ALWAYS! Shawn

Ptah, Ptoohey and f'ing bulldust.....
Ever heard of leading by example??
Where is the ''Don't do this at home" warning on the Vid?
Just think about the probability of Bob K following in your footsteps before you launch into this 'irresponsible advertisement' and turn other people into statisticx.
To their health!
Nic.

Re: Unsafe practices.. camera toting idiots flying gyros
I think ' dont do this at home ' notices should be banned.
People who need warnings like that are a hindrance and
should be allowed, possibly even encouraged, to remove
themselves from the gene pool as soon as possible.
Lighten up, Nic. The video was a 'blast' to watch.
Airshow acts do exactly the same.
Its not like he's a salesman for gyros or anything.
If he didnt make exciting videos you'd have to watch mine
and get to sleep early.
P.S would you send the Sun back up this side, please.

Nic, being careful is very smart, being paranoid is pointless. We'd get nothing done.
PS "Don't try this at home" Don't read this (by connecting to the internet, you may get a virus or something)... Choices are made based on the known situation, not the perception from others... but fair enough... Nobody was there to see what the actual situation looked like but me and my camera guy, so I understand your perspective.
Safe Flying...

Re: Unsafe practices.. camera toting idiots flying gyros
Geez Nik, wots the hassle mate.
Think of the brite side, if sumone copies him and stuffs it up, that leaves more room for us up there ay.
But seriously, solong as the pilot is aware of the limits n hazards, theres no problem. And like el gyro said, if sum unit thinks he can do it just coz sumone eles can, then let ol mate darwin step in. It happens wether its on youtube or not. Youtube just speeds up the proces.
BTW Nik, now im interested in your oppinion on that vid of the ferel.

Birdman,
Not nice, advocating the Darwin awards for idiots who like to follow..
What you can do with a gyro is, as I have said before, sheerly amazing, scarey, it might even make some people wince to look at it. But there is not a doubt, your skills with a gyro are great. I'm quite certain you've had a very large amount of practice on each 'trick' through your thousands of hours of gyro operation. Me, with my weeeee little 40+ hours would not and should never contemplate trying to copy what you do, far too dangerous for me, I'm sticking to ccts and s&L for some time to go. One day, after I've got up another thousand hours I might think about it, and leave it at that. You must know by now that I am conservative, some other blokes are conservative and come a cropper on the simplest of moves, others are not conservative and come a cropper on the simplest of moves as well. I know of two such pilots, neither are flying, nor will they pursue it further as they were 'warned off' continuing - one by injury, the other by finances, but in the reverse order with respect to each other.
One thing about cameras.. I always remember from the Bathust car races that it always seems to be that the camera car ends up in a bingle.. why is it so??
cheers,
Nick

Re: Unsafe practices.. camera toting idiots flying gyros
Thats not the point i was after your oppinion on Nik.
I wanted to know wot you thought bout the footage be'n on TV, not wot the footage showed.
Itd be no different to the effects of Shawns flic, coz sure as sh1t, if you say "dont try this at home kids",.... all the kids will.
Im not advocating anythn BTW.
And 'why is it so?'.
Nik, mate, you dont expect the camerman to mount his expendable camera in grandma's car do you.
You wouldnt watch it, would you?

Re: Unsafe practices.. camera toting idiots flying gyros
birdman,
Having got your drift I'll address the differences in flying styles between yourself in your video vs Shawn in his, the styles are chalk and cheese to compare.. your flight is obviously radical, skilled and beyond the ambit of the ordinary pilot, and I have no doubt they would know this, appreciate it and avoid doing it until they had a fair degree of training, just as I know, appreciate and would not attempt it without significant training.
Shawn's piloting by comparison is tame and achievable for the low time pilot, as Shawn intimates, he paints an illusion of speed and low flight using smoke and mirrors, there are no illusions in what you are doing... its all scarey. The danger of Shawn's film is that it looks achievable for the novice flyer - and it is achievable for the novice flyer, and if the novice flyer DID NOT consider the risks as I have pointed out then they may come a cropper... blowing bubbles at the bottom of your nearest billabong / river / seaside landscape scenery.
Hope this helps your appreciation.
cheers,
Nick.
