Cross country

I always get a smile on my face when I hear,""I wan't a gyro that will do cross country". I think we have all had that dream, but once we actually get some hours under our belt we realise that in reality that is not what gyro's are about. They are bloody slow , uncomfortable and not practical by car or airline standards. They should be looked at in closer similarity to Trikes. Their capabilities are similar. Could you imagine taking your wife away for a dirty weekend in one of those. Qantas or the car will always win. When you compare cost, they still win. Some mates of mine relayed similar dreams, but now that they have learnt to fly they think the trailer is the best option for any distance, and see that the gyro is a really nice platform for sightseeing. My hat goes off to all those fools flying to Lamaroo, they are true ironmen. Lucky their not taking their wives because sore and tired is no way to start a dirty weekend. But then again there seems to be a lot of lonely old men flying. Interesting corrolation that! Come on shoot me down in flames, I deserve it. Ken

If i want to ***** the boss, im not thinkn bout flyn, or driven, or sitn in one of them aluminium coffins next to sum annoyn %$#@.
But if your ina hurry, then yes youd be better ina coffin.
BTW, they are nuthn like trikes, you dont enjoy flyn them after bout 10;00am coz its too rough.
Id rather RAF it over to the nats anyday. Thats why its called a FLYin. The best part of it is getn there.

Wots so ironmanish bout puttn along at old womans speed enjoyn the view?

Re: Cross country

Ken, I disagree
The biggest advantage of flying a gyro is being able to fly on those windy day when all other aircraft are grounded. So if you plan it correctly, flying cross country DOWN WIND on these days is great.
Getting back can be the problem.

Regards Sam........

Re: Cross country

Ken,

Interesting comments.
I agree if I want some comfort on a long cross country I will fly my RV4(only because I like to go upside down occasionaly!) or go Qantas( especially when my better half wants to come too.).
Then why am I planning to fly 3000+km in a gyro in a few weeks - Birdy has said it well there is no better way if you want to go low and slow, Lameroo is a Flyin and Iam sick of attending the premier gyro event and not flying in!
Last but not least because as a "middle aged" old fart (my sons definition not mine) I still like a challenge.

Regards,

Adrian

Re: Cross country

Adrian,
Has there ever been a Nationals in WA?
Is it possible to hold one there, ie, we did the Alice Nats with a club of 8 people, 75 people turned up and 23 gyros.
Sure numbers would be down a bit but its hardly fair if they are always over this side somewhere.
Just a bit of food for thought.

Re: Cross country

It actualy worked out to be quicker in the wasa than any other option last year, and i hada better view.
Woulda taken 4 days min to drive, and all you see is the sides of the road and the other idiots onit. [and be too buggered to do anythn wen you get there ]
If i took quantas, it woulda taken 3 days too, one into town, one flyn over [ and you cant see jacsh1t from 30 odd thousand feet ] and another driven ina hire car back to biggenden.
Gimme a gyro anyday.

But i recon even id draw the line at the nullaboring , friggnell, 1000s of km of nuthn, youd have t be iron man just t stay awake. Reon id do a long road, out into the desert sumwere.

Sam, head winds mean you can get lower n slower, and get a better look.

And Russ, if you knew wot used to pump his adrenilin, youd know why he's now an ex junky, even if he dose do loops in his gyro.

Finaly, i hope the next nats is in WA, coz iv never flown that direction very far yet.

Re: Cross country

Guys,

We would be keen to host a nationals but the reality is the West Coast is a bloody long way from the East Coast. If there is the interest then we will do it but my vote would be for another in Alice -NT nice and central for all of us.

Re: Cross country

Great replies. I love it when you really prove me wrong. Birdy, I think I'm getting too old and have too many aching bones because 3hrs non stop is about all I can stand. Good reply ya bloody hillbilly. I'll try and post a photo of my new toy soon. I think you'll like it. I might have to get Eric to post them for me because I don't drive this keyboard real well. I was tossing up on this subject or... "gyros are dangerous and should be banned". Come on really give it to me now.
Bugger WA. Have it at my place then I don't have to travel too far. Hope this doesn't appear selfish. Everyone attending should bring me a present and not some crappy choc egg. Ken the Considerate.
