Sure was , some 49/ 46 gyros of all shapes and sizes. Magnis, MT's Fame chook which arrived with a broken wing but PB had it flying late saturday. 2 Owen Dulls magnificent gyros . I was fortunate enough to get a fly in one and it only reinforced just how really good they are and how sweetly they fly.
Competition was pretty hot despite Birdy not competing, around 20 odd gyros in most events.
Weather was great, location excellent and those who didn't go missed seeing flying demos from arguably 2 of the worlds very best in Birdy and the other David in Jacko who flew a 403 powered machine and showed how to ring a the very best from a low powered gyro . I reckon we have a photo of Jacko getting the 403 to 90 genuine degrees .Birdy flew a new Rosco open framed 912 in a demo that had the crowd applauding. He and Jacko showed what loading up the rotors could do. I might mention that the 403 had riveted blades from years ago so Jacko had to work at it where as birdy had new AK's that couldnt keep up with the agility of the Rosco gyro.I could talk about the 2 Davids all night and still not do justice to their display, all of it in complete control and safety . A beautiful sight to behold!!!!
Sadly 2 gyros had minor undercarriage problems with the usual effects.....a 4 to 5 $$$ bill but no skin off . Even more tragic was the WA mob loosing a mate on the way over ...all for the cost of a plain old bolt instead of an aircraft quality Jesus bolt !! Was a terrific effort from the WA boys to do the trip and compete given the circumstances. Remarkable mob of blokes. Top effort guys!!
The big news was a young NT bullrider who had just soloed cleaned up the experienced guys in a few of the completions. Rob owned the new 912 Rosco and had birdy tutoring him but flew like a veteran and if he comes back next year, well, be prepared for 2 or 3 !! Rob can ride too and was rookie of the year last year. A couple of hours up and he and birdy set off to fly back to the NT yesterday morning, most of us could only dream of being that proficient at those low hours. Incredible effort Rob and you will not find a nicer young fellow anywhere !! I take my hat off to you son !!
Looks like photos tomorrow guys, sorry, today went way too quick !
