Soldering Cables

Looks like I have a silver solder job coming up. Stainless steel cable that requires brass fittings. I'm told using very pure or even solid silver with separate flux is the go along with a very hot soldering iron. Any advice?

Re: Soldering Cables

Dave when I worked mine I used a S/S Shimano bike brake cable.
One end has a small stepped cylinder end on it. I simply cut the larger step off the end and it then fit right into my 3 way cable box.
I then contacted Bert Flood who supplied me a small screwed cylinder to fit to the oil injection pump lever.
I did try searching the different cable manufacturers but no one makes an end to suit the pump lever.

Hope this makes sense

Sam.

Hmmm,

Being a plumber the only joy I've had with silver soldering is with an oxy torch, or a propane torch on a small pipe - but that was only on copper tubing and steel fittings - car brake lines - 20% works best for steel and still use std silver soldering flux - comweld 602 from memory though don't quote me - I don't have the jar with me.

I've never used a soldering iron to do it, and I doubt that it would work, though I may stand corrected...

Could you put a swaged end on it to the same effect?

Cheers,

Ncik.

Re: Soldering Cables

Thanks Guys,
Rang Bert Flood's and was told that they don't sell the made up assembly but did have the right cable at $3 a meter. Got some of that. They told me to just heat up the old gear to get the ends off and resolder. Now armed with Comweld 965 flux, suppossedly high strength silver solder and the soldering iron from hell, I'll report back.

OK, swaged ends do make sense. Given that Rotax have the soldered arrangement as standard practice, I'll give that a go first.

Dave

BTW Time to get a 70L seat tank. Does anyone have Gerry G's phone number?
