Question Jabiru 2200

What's the deal, this engine is listed as comparable to the 912 in the wikkipedia.

85 HP at 3300 rpm, peak torque at 2500 rpm

Air cooled.......anyone fitted and flown one of these.???
Direct drive.....could/would you fit a redrive?

Mitch

Re: Jabiru 2200

G'day Mitch
Don Mcmillan had one fitted to a gyro up my part of the world. Allot of problems keeping it cool due to lack of airflow around the engine in the pusher configeration.

Re: Jabiru 2200

G'Day Rob,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Mate is it possible to get some pics of Don's install on his gyro.

I am very interested in any and all Jabiru 2200 gyro aplications.

How much trouble Rob? Any further details or contact with Don would be great. I know someone from a cold weather climate who is keen as mustard to use said engine.

Cheers,

Mitch.

Re: Jabiru 2200

Mitch,
i don't have any photo's but Don is a TA his phone number will be on the ASRA site or in the mag.

I believe he tipped it over a few years ago and I'm not sure if he ever rebuilt it.

Re: Jabiru 2200

Mitch, a couple of the ultralight guys around here tried the Jab motors years ago in some planes with no success at all.
Jabiru even refunded one bloke his money after they tried many times themselves and failed to make them work. One plane I remember was a lightwing. After Jabiru took their engine back he put a 912 into it with no problems at all.
It seems the trouble is they are made for slippery little planes and anything with too much drag they can't keep them cool and they will not perform.

Graeme.

Re: Jabiru 2200

If Rotax can put a seperate driven fan on the 503 and have a great little motor, why cant Jabaru do the same.

Re: Jabiru 2200

Mitch - they do put the 220 jab on pusher ultralights successfully ...

There's a Boorabee here that has one on it - they are a pusher .... I haven't heard of any heating problems .

VW's were an air cooled also don't forget, so they would have had similar problems.

In my opinion Mitch - the Jab wouldn't be too much different from using a VW .... good engines ... wrong applications ...

Re: Jabiru 2200

Cheers Geoff,

]I think an oil cooler and a shrouded fan would be a good start for someone wanting to use a J2200. They have fairly deep fins.

Rotor the engine stats indicate, the thing has been designed as an aircraft engine. If one was to keep the oil cooler and as Des mentioned configure a shroud and fan, this might make all the difference.

What do folks think about this?

Mitch.
