Ignition advance..
I was going to email Tim mceagle privately re this subject but thought others may be interested.
Tim, I know you have set up many after market ECUs on Subaruu ej series engines . I was wondering what you set the max ignition timing at considering the fuel quality of today and the possibility, that in the outback, it may be more likely to come across fuel that has lost some of its octane rating.

Re: Ignition advance..
G'day Paul
28* to 30* Maximum from about 2500rpm up. We do not need to worry about pollution considerations so we do not have to run the high advances that most modern engines run on deceleration, it only complicates the issue.
Octane rating is poorly understood. It 'de-sensitisers' the fuel and retards the flame front to help stop pre-ignition. In most cases with an engine designed to run on un-leaded, it can actually lose a little power if run on high octane.

Re: Ignition advance..
Just to add to this Paul, Tim did my set up and I have run on some very ordinary fuel but have never had any problems although I always use "Flashlube" fuel additive, on one particular day, the boys had trouble starting their 600 Hondas and the bikes ran fairly roughly but my old suby idled as normal and gave no rpblems

Re: Ignition advance..
Another reason to run a genuine soob pewtar, with knock censor.
Pewtar automatically adjusts timings / fuels to achieve a "managed" engine.
Those soob guys spent mega bucks on "R&D" why not use genuine

it'll also let you know when your boot, bonnet or doors are open, raise your aerial, buckle your seatbelt, wipe your windows, keep the inside temp just right for you, and umpteen other things ... oh, and lets not forget adjust the heating in your seat!

Re: Ignition advance..
Tim, you must have tried a number of after market ECUs. Which do you prefer for gyro operations?

Re: Ignition advance..
Paul, sorry I must have missed this post.
I have only had experience with the Motec, Injec and Wolf.
Of those I prefer the Wolf for its onboard programming ability although the latest version is more complicated than the originals, but there are many more options, including more output drivers. Once you have a running program though it is easy to make the finer adjustments.
