Re: EFI.......onboard pewtars

Russ, is the pewter a Wolf? I had water in the connection where the main loom from motor plugs in and also had a problem with water getting into the igniter......let me know and I can do a photo tomorrow if its any help.

If its a wolf, its just about bullet proof, mine has been given the treatment! I'm not sure about the coil packs and how good they are except to say I have not heard anyone have a problem with them.

Ring Tim McClure if you need help.

Re: EFI.......onboard pewtars

Hi Russ. The ecu is a Motec. I have never had one fail yet.

I think Allan is at Humpty Doo these days.

Aussie Paul.

The trick is to get some one who knows what they're doing with them and get him to make any changes that might need doing That way you get to where you want to go in one piece

Re: EFI.......onboard pewtars

Hi Russ
Check the harmonic balancer and the crank angle sensor and wiring if it gets no signal then if it doesnt have cam angle sensors hooked up then it wont fire either, as well as the coil packs failing. Usually if its multi coil they dont all fail at once unless shorted or something else bad.

Hope this helps

Regards Mark

Re: EFI.......onboard pewtars

Russ,

You could stick your tongue on the lead and crank it over if you're really stupid...

I gather that you are not that way so:

Check for voltage available at the coil first - with these computers they would tend to 'sink' votage from the coil rather than sourcing it. ie, every time they need to fire the coil they would short a transistor to earth and that would fire the coil - so you turn on the ignition without starting it and see if there is 12v on the low tension side of the coil packs. If there is none I would be looking at the loom for a wire failure of sorts - cracked at a crimp connector or a wire dislodged going to the coil. The voltage should go 12v or higher then drop every time the piston comes to the fire mark at about 12 degrees before TDC, alternately it could be low and go high around that point.. I'm not famialiar with the engine in question. Either way if the voltage drops off and rises or VVS at near TDC it points to HT side coil failure.

If there is 12v then have a look at the terminal opposite the one with 12v on it and jumper it to earth by brushing it on the engine frame - to see if a small spark occurs - pull a spark plug out and see if it sparks as well, if this happens it may be down to the ECU being faulty. If there is no 'big' spark at the spark plug - make sure it is earthed - then the coil pack could be faulty - check the resistance between the HT lead and the engine block - if it is open circuited - eg 'OL' on the multi meter then the HT side of the coil has failed. If the low tension side is short circuited - very low resistance or 'OL' then the coil pack has failed.

Give me a buzz on 0418811953 if you wish for further explanation.

Cheers,

Nick

Re: EFI.......onboard pewtars

Rotor had the best idea. The trick is to get some one who knows what they're doing with them and get him to make any changes that might need doing That way you get to where you want to go in one piece

I would get my note book out and plug in the ecu, and fire up the Motec soft ware that is installed. Then I would hit the diagnostics key and it will tell me what the trouble is.

Bloody "dumb" northerners. A note book is a lap top pewter Russ.

Actually I think I remember Allan has a mechanic mate in Darwin that is up to speed on Motec gear. The base program was using a lot of fuel and he was going to get this mate to fine tune it.

Glad the sons op went well.

Aussie Paul.
