THIS SHOULD BE MADE MANITORY ON ALL GYROS FITTED WITH ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS

To all who have the electric fuel pumps fitted to your machines world wide.
I HAVE PLACED THIS HERE AS MY CONTRABUTION TO THE POSSIBILITY OF SAVING ONE OF MY GYRO MATES LIVE'S SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD, SO PLEASE READ THIS AND INSTAL ONE ON YOUR MACHINE.
Are you a towering inferno waiting to happen? If you do not have a AUTOMATIC isolating switch in your electric fuel pump wireing system. What is $50.00 in the total cost of a machine, to provide this safety device to isolate the fuel pump in the event of a incedent where the motor is stopped in mishap on the ground.
There is a 2 terminal oil pressure switch produced by the HONEYWELL HOBBS GROUP that is manditory in the car racing scene which does the job. This should be available from most reputable auto stores.
The positive lead from your ignition switch would connect to terminal #1 and the fuel pump would connect to terminal #2. Then also connected a press button switch between Terminal #1&2 to over ride the safety isolater switch till the oil pressure is to operational pressure.
When you start your engine you hold down the press button, crank and start engine and hold the button till the oil pressure builds to operating pressure. Then the pressure switch keeps the system pumping. When the engine stops the oil pressure stops there by opening the pressure switch and turning the power off to the fuel pump.

The part number for the one required is 10 -30 psi 83298 screw terminal model or 83313 for the spade terminal type. The 33-75 psi 83301 screw terminal model and 83317 for the spade terminal type.
The oil fitting size is 1/8-27 NPT male thread.
They are rated at 8 amps-12volts
Size is 2.30 inchs high and 1.47 inchs dia

Well I'm off my soap box now but think about it and act in your own welfare, so that I can meet you and you can give me or or
Safe flying to you all.
Des Garvin.

Thats Ok for a 4 stroke

If you have a 2 stroke , I'm investigating a frequency switch you can connect to the tacho wiring, so if the
engine stops you kill the fuel pump. You will need to have a primer button to fill the carbis to get the system ready.

I'll keep you posted on componets and costs..

Re: THIS SHOULD BE MADE MANITORY ON ALL GYROS FITTED WITH ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS

Birdy Hi,
I was informed 10 psi is the minimum pressure setting required to make them close the contacts. I can not varify that till next week when i go back to Geraldton as the sheet on them is there. Your 4 banger rotax's will run them fine. The two bangers will have problems though as these switchs work on oil pressure. Then the two bangers have a pulse pump anyway.
Yeh still putting a few holes down here and there. See the water gods have been giving you the odd drop or two. At last we are getting 5 or 6 drops from them.
If you or anyone else would like a copy of the sheet send us a email with your fax number and i will fax a copy to you next week.

Ross, int there a lighting coil on them 2bangers? And from memory theres a 'charge' light that is activated wen the donk/charging systm fails. Maybe it could be intersepted sumhow.

Thanx Des.

Re: THIS SHOULD BE MADE MANITORY ON ALL GYROS FITTED WITH ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS

2 strokes shouldn't be a problem as about 99% run the stock pneumatic fuel pump. I also run an electric, but only for priming. Of all the trikes, gyros, and ultralights I have come across, I only know of one which started leaking, but never failed.
Seem pretty reliable to me (the pumps of corse!!!)

WARNING
Please, never rely on one of them f%$#@ pulse pumps.

Its bout the only thing i didnt like bout the 462 i had on me old trike. I got caught twice [in me first 50 hours], once with big damage, coz the pump apparently ' got outa sync' or suthn. Buggered if i know wot happens, but occasionaly itll just stop pumpn, momenterialy, usualy wen under full throttle. I fitted a lec lec one and ran it full time and it never stuttered agin in 300 odd hours.

Re: THIS SHOULD BE MADE MANITORY ON ALL GYROS FITTED WITH ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS

Folks,

For what it is worth, a Vacuum Switch can also be fitted to effect a cut out, though at high revs when the manifold pressure is relatively high it might not be such a good idea, the settings would be dependent on the motor.

Cheers,

Nick.

Re: THIS SHOULD BE MADE MANITORY ON ALL GYROS FITTED WITH ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS

Nick, With your post statement I gather there could be a hick up on the vaccum switch so may be not as reliable as required. Whith the oil pressure one, should it be low you want it stopped any way to save the pocket. I know it may cause a problem if it happens over not so good landing area. If this is the case you are in the position due to your own choice, no option for complaint Des Garvin
