Re: New Tall Tail

Hey Sonny,

This one is for Allan. He do the final dress bog and paint. He will also need to balance the tail as required. So balance tubes may be added top and bottom.

The T tail is Larry Neals design/product and we have been given special permission to manufacture and sell same as one off item/component on this side of the world. Plus add then to the kits as part of the Oz Butterfly /Monarch range. I dont believe Larry would let me export back to the US as he sells kits only and the only other T tail out there is on the Carter Copter craft, which they purchased as a test bed.
I will ask Larry for you Sonny...best I can do.

Cheers,

Mitch.

Re: New Tall Tail

G'Day Russ,

No Russell, not self supporting, thats only the T tail, that is arranged that way. The Tall Tail have a rudder horn in the base as per pic attached.

They have a similar pivot at the top. Brackets to fix at the top would be up to the individual to manufacture to suit their ship and prop size.

I have 6" extended from each end here on this one so that Allan can centre the HS in the prop stream.
If required we will manufacture little composite shrouds for the top and bottom to dress off the tubes if Allan thinks it is required.

This is the same size tail and shape (different layup) as the Golden Butterfly in the USA.

Cheers,

Mitch.

The HS is approx 7.6 sq ft. The vertical is propably around 9 sq ft.

Re: New Tall Tail

Gents,

This was my first Tall Tail Layup and it's not perfect. When putting the bottom and top sections together I misaligned the two slightly, due to the moulds being slightly imperfect and my not having the required knowledge or skill to assure correct alignment. I have been told this may not present any problems.
Certainly the next one will be more perfectly symetrical.
The tails are mass balanced using nose weights in the vertical fin and/or balance tubes extending forward of the vertical surfaces. This eliminates the tail flutter and need for anti servo tabs.

Cheers,

Mitch.

Re: New Tall Tail

Well done Mitch, as always, looks great, and better that a symetrical type.
Would like to make a general statement though, and certainly not directed at you, or your tail Mitch.
I would like to see someone come up with a glass tall tail which incorporated fixed HS to a Fin, and rudder.
Below is a pic of what I mean. I still feel it would be stronger, lighter, and more aerodynamically stable.
Just my 2 bob.

Sam.............

Re: New Tall Tail

G'Day Sam,

Mate that is a great Tail! And what a cool looking gyro, some different stuff designed into that ship.

I tell you what Sam, you always get me motivate...check out side on pic. I can do something like this perhaps.
I would need to look closely at the raf hinge setup and let you know. But I think it would just be a case of cutting, blogging, shaping the cut down tail. Installing in the Fixed VS the hinge mechanism and then designing and manufacturing the rudder to suit. Moulds taken off the rudder and then everything can still be manufactured from the same three piece mould plus rudder mould.

I think it can be done.

Cheers,

Mitch.

Cheers,

Mitch
