This is the last pic taken of G 1961 in flying condition :anger:. More details as report is filed , however it seems there was an attempt at an unauthorised & unsupervised solo , resulting in the machine hitting the ground in nose down attitude , the student suffered no injuries.
Why students constantly disregard what the instructer has advised them & go out & do their own thing is beyond me :( .

It simply emphasises the problem instructors have with students who have their own aircraft. You can plead with them "not to do this at home" but most will. Currently instructors have no legal right to withhold the keys to stop these aircraft from being flown. Apart from the expensive exercise that the owner now has, it becomes yet another statistic against the sport.

Oh sh|t! ....
anyone looking for a cheap gyro that needs a bit of work!!
He seems to be well off the strip .... what caused the forced landing, engine out or in trouble due to lack of experience?

Rotor,
as the topic heading says - " Unauthorised solo ". It was also unsupervised . The student was told three times before I left the property to get some further training , by either taking the machine to an instructor ( Caboolture was suggested ) or have an instructor travel out there ,as he was not ready to attempt a solo flight.
As an assistant instructor,I cannot authorise a first solo.
I had'nt even made it back home before the phone rang with the news :punch:.
You are right , Rotor , that is the strip on the other side of the fence. I would say by the pics it has hit very hard nose down( there was NO engine failure - even if there was , that should not be the result) & that the cabin is irrepairable.
It's only a machine that can be replaced , it could have been a lot worse.

Echo,
Yes, I presumed he was able to fly but not yet authorised to solo - most people have enough sense to if know they haven't got the ability to go round for the first time. I presumed he had done his flight training and was at the advanced stage of ground work, maybe even hopping. Obviously not, and wont be in that machine!

The problem 'ol mate faces now if he wishes to continue flying is finding an instructor willing to take him on.. :moon:.
This incident also reflects on my ability to provide flying training .

I don't agree that it reflects on your ability as an instructor. You can only advise people ... lead a horse to water ... you can't be responsible if they don't do as they are asked! He's not a child and has to take full responsibility for his actions.
Most people do as they are asked - when I was learning my instructor was 800 miles away .... didnt even enter my mind to do a circuit until I was told I was ready. Lets hope he's learn't his lesson, even though it was an expensive one it wasn't as expensive as it could have been!

Echo, Its not your fault by any stretch of the imagination. You did what you had to do. The student was warned not to fly without further training, and that factt that he chose to ignore this, means he's a bloody lunatic.
You have nothing to feel guilty about.

It's very sad to see such a great looking machine reduced to twisted parts, but theres nothing
you could have done to prevent it.
The question I ask is why do gyro students do it? Is it common in other forms of aviation? Is
it because gyros attract a certain rebel element?
What were the characteristics of this particular student. Had he shown signs of not following
your instructions in the past.

G'day Ross,
mate , you look as happy as a dog with two tails with that new machine :joy:. Congrats.
The student showed no signs of going out & doing his own thing . He had Terry Boatswain go up there & do some
training with him , they had to trailer the machine to Injune as the property strip was'nt ready. Terry told him he was'nt ready for solo & to get some more training ;he then did a bit of flying with another pilot from Mitchell , he told him to get some more training , so waited for me to get up there . I couldnt stay long as I had to get home for a funeral , but the flying we did get in was good & the indications were that he would seek further instruction. If I had of stayed one more day then things may have been different.
Happy flying with your new "NEWO".

Rotor,
the wreck was bought by a bloke in Sydney , & has Jeff Henly Smith helping him
with the rebuild . I don't know if I can say too much ( none of my business - not that
has ever stopped me in the past .... ) but it will have some good mods done
by Jeff :google:.
...ere's a pic in the back of Jeff's tonner in Singleton on their way home...
