Is there any set formula or theory for the tuning of blades for optimum performance given that air density changes throughout the year?
Ted
RRRRRRRRRRR...........yea OK...... Tune em up to the best you can get, at the minute. Later in the year when the density etc etc drops their performance, tune em up by dialing on more throttle. O yea, lengthen your airstrip too.
On the other hand.............99.9% of blade manufacturers preset the blade angles before you get em...........non adjustable after that. All done in the hub bar, supposed you could get 2 sets of hub bars, but to increase your blade angles then you suffer other probs too. Every action has a reaction........so the original setting is usually the all round optimal.........sort of. Know 2 blade makers in Oz, that know their shit, and asking questions to em and hearing the answers is bloody interesting.........prob is they won't get into the forums..........pity

Now Russell, it is better if they know about rotor blades rather than their shit!!!!!
With the adjustable Raf blades I used to change the pitch setting twice a year, or if some big fat bastard like you turned up for training I would dial in a bit more pitch.
If you haven't noticed Russel, it is pick on Russell week !!!!!! :evil_laugh:
Aussie Paul. :mrhappy
Get back to NZ ya tosser...............stop bleatin here.. :moon:
Anyway, the majority of RAF flyers here aren't using RAF blades............are they. And A little birdy tells me you're not either, coz you prefer our OZY blades ..............the non adjustable types :fingers:
As to the pickin bit................bring it on :Bat1:
Anyway................keep up your good work................O yea, I'm feelin real confident my new RAF [with oz mods] will be in the air before your thingo :poke:

Hello,
Not sure how to put this but, should I be thinking about blades that are normal sized and having power to burn or go for oversized blades and only puck good days to fly?
Ian
Ian...........bit more to it than that.........
A number of spices go into this mix to get the rite omlette.
weight, power, usage, to name a couple............the trick with gyros, is the lighter you make the mass, the more easier it is to get a real good allround performing blades.
Power to weight is the key..........well one of em.............plenty of power, low weight. Even then it may be possible to have too much power.........ie toyota echo, with a 350 chev motor
GENERALLY...........single seaters weigh in at approx 200kg. They fly great on 26ft blades with 65hp.........thereabouts
To fly SLOW.............you need good HP, and or BIG blades............generally gyros cruise along at 40.....50kts
