Gents Please note that the drive chain of the SSC has been removed for initial test flight. The drive chain is not all that heavy and is being 'thinned' up a tad anyway.
Also the folding blades displayed at OshKosh were designed for the Super Sky Car a lighter version of same will be prototyped for SSC.
Cheers,
Mitch.

CONGRATULATIONS TO LARRY NEAL having successfully flown the SSC with a 26' folding rotor blade system.
Larry has lightened the original hub bar arrangement, the system now weighing 87 lbs and folds down to 12'.
Earlier initial test flights of SSC were done on a 24' disc, with Monarch having a std 23' disc.
Larry says the folding blade system flys a smooth as the std blades and does 50-55 mph at half throttle throw. This configuration of the SSC flys at 65 mph, about 5 mph slower than Monarch and easily flys as slow as 20 mph.
The new drivechain Larry is installing is more robust than the earlier prototype and he hopes to demonstrate same at Sun and Fun in the US in April, 2006.
Whilst Larry initially intended for a full jump takeoff capability for SSC he has decided on a more practical and safer approach. Designated the Metro Launch System, short 30 foot (9m) taxi/jump launches with excellent pitch and yaw stability will be possible.
Larry is hopefull that this system will be prototyped in time for Sun and Fun also.
Happy New Year.

Mitch,
Just a query regarding the amount of "clean" air getting back to the tail. Looking at the pic it seems that the air flow may be compromised somewhat with all the structural fittings?

Hey Ted,
Seasons greetings! We will have to wait ans see what Larry has to say about all this down the track. A tri-tail configuration was on the drawing board some time back but this tail is doing the job right now. I guess if you look a many gyro configurations the same comments about good clean air flow back to the tail could be made.
Prior to me importing the first Butterfly, I had some local 'experts' have a look at it for me and that same comment was made in reference to the std 57" wheel base Butterfly....go figure? :eyebrow:
Sun and Fun 2006 will be interesting.

Ted,
Take a look at that SparrowHawk type gyro on the Gander thread, if it has a radiator mounted down low on the rear keel as many do, then there is another gyro where one could claim possible lack of good clean air getting back to any part of the tail.
Just thinking out loud, so keep your pistols in your pocket Russell. No plans for a ducati engine, running a 582 rotax at the moment but I did hear a whisper about Harley...... :censored:
