HI people. 1st time poster for my partner who hopes someone else reading this can help with info on the steps to take for re-certification to fly after having had heart by-pass surgery. Any good contacts on examiners in Brisbane who you would recommend ? Any tips or information on the process would be much appreciated please.

Kate,

The standard of medical health required for flying a gyro is that for a truck driver's licence, so having a heart bypass surgery is not necessarily a preventative factor to flying a gyrocopter.

I would recommend the following steps:

Get a list of all the medications and procedures your partner has / is utilising and list their physical and psycotrophic [mental] effects - is he using anything that can / will affect his reflexes, balance or vision?, this one is absolutely crucial.

Check diet inputs and work toward fitness and cholesterol reduction.

Contact the doctor / surgeon responsible and verify that your partner is up to it physically and get a medical clearance for him - see the medical examiners certificate on the ASRA site - at this URL:

http://www.asra.org.au/documentation.htm

See this: F011_Solo_and_Student_Pilots_Medical_Certificate.p df

Get in contact with Allan Wardill at the ASRA Forum, he'll be able to put you in contact with the appropriate people after the medical is cleared.

I'd recommend after your partner is all clear for this, flying can be made safe and it is good fun. Good fun can cure many a broken heart..

I would also recommend your partner read the 'what not to do' post on the ASRA forum as well.

I wish you both well.

Cheers,

Nic.

I'm not aware of anything that would stop a person from gaining a gyro license provided a doctor was prepared to sign that person off for a drivers license. So no 'fooling' should be needed!

Nick,a normal car licence is all thats normally needed unless etc etc but all that is needed where there is a problem, is for a doctor to sign the form saying that person is fit to fly!

I see you are in the Brisbane area Kate so you have excellent instructors and a very active gyro club at Caboolture if you wish to have a go.

Warning!! gyro flying is probably one of the greatest thrills you can experience so be prepared for the addiction to grab you and your partner !! I have a few thousand hours up and it still gives me a thrill .

Yes Kate, Brian is correct in that Brissy/Sth Qld has some excellent instructors.

How long is it since your better half has flown and what was he flying? Their isn't anything more exhilarating than flying an open gyro .... hope to see you in the air soon!

Cheers

Kate,

If your up Charters Towers way give me a ring, i would gladly take you both for a fly free of charge, damn i seem to be always giving people free rides, but the smiles on the faces as i do my sliding landing in front of the hangar is payment enough. :)

Brian,

I seem to recall having a conversation wiht John Evans [Dr] who does medicals about this some years back... I may be wrong about it but I think that is the standard he'd nominated.. Most of us meet it so there usually isn't an issue.

Cheers,

Nic.

Nick,

if you look at the yearly application to renew your licence it states -

: .... Certify that my health standard is equivalent to that required for the issue of a private motor vehicle driver's licence in Australia or I hold a current CASA Class 1 / 2 Medical Certificate as applicable"

Rotor,

Right. I did preface my comment with 'I may be wrong about this', so I doubt that Brian would be keeping scores.

Regardless of this, I would recommend anyone considering flight after such surgery to go through the steps suggested prior. It is a safeguard for one's own safety and well being. I'd hate to read another coroner's report like the one about OD's gyrocopter, where there is some chance of the pilot having been killed through a survivable and temporary incapacitation, it takes mere seconds of distraction to come a cropper, so removing the risk of this is always a good idea before you lift off. A car has two safety features that a gyro doesn't - it is always on the ground so there is less kinetic energy to impart on the occupants in the event of a crash, and it is a moving safety shell, engineered to protect its occupants in an accident to some degree. In gyros we are definitely reliant on 'Primary' safety features, which means avoiding an accident at all costs, ala Arthur Dent in 'The hitch hikers guide to galaxy' - fly at the ground and miss!!

Cheers,

Nic.

Thats good advice Nick although its up to the doctor to sign that the person is capable of acting as pilot. Dr Evans is an examiner of airmen and the standard for a PPL is higher than a gyro license so that explains the different standards.
No, I certainly dont keep scores!! :)

Nick .. I was just pointing out that it was a car not truck .... and the other part is yes .... if you've had a medical condition then the CASA doc must be signed off. We're not suggesting that this be bypassed and yes again - none of us want to see anyone try to bypass the correct procedure whether it result in an accident or not.

And the score was just me trying to lighten the thread ... it really doesn't matter who's right and who's wrong - or really whether some ones right or some ones wrong ..... what really matters is the correct info is passed on ...
