Howdy all !

I was wondering , though I know in THEORY how a fixed wing aircraft takes off in a cross wind
I got to thinkin' how does a gyro take off in a cross wind ? is it the same or is it alot diferent ?

I'ed think it's purdy much the same but the crafts are so diferent , there may well be a big diference in the proccess...
any of you fellers ever take off in a cross wind ?

Comein' down shouldn't realy be a problem cuz you can do it is such a short airea ya just point into the wind and shoot for a no roll landing or close .... but take off is another story .... ya need that ground speed and that means alot of room so you may well be takeing off with the wind off to the side instead of right down your nose ....
so what do you do ?
tilt the rotor into the wind a bit ?
flatten the rotor till a certain speed and haul back for all your worth ?
.... or don't fly till the wind is just right ? hehehehe
I realy don't know ! so twill be interesting to see your coments !
thank ya !

A gyro is different to a FW Bob, so you gota fly it different, well, not realy, but it feels different.
Both machines have to counter the x wind or it'll just blow ya off the road.
The major difference between a FW and a gyro is the FW is FIXED to the wing, so wot ever roll or pitch you put into the fiy'n surface is transfered to the hole machine.
In a gyro, you stick into the wind a bit so the rotor is counter'n the force of the xwind. You use the rudder to keep you centered on the road and the rotors to hold you upright. If you feel it leaning to one side, just stick it over.

I just got back from camp and flew me machine back.
I left there at bout 2pm, in bout 35*c and a northerly gusting at right angles at bout 30 odd mph.
The 'strip' is the road, which is cut outa 20' high very thick scrub and bout 30' wide. take'n off woz no big deal, just point it down the road and gibit plenty. :pistoles:

hehehe
I kind'a expected that from youz Birdy ! no problem just give it throttle and pull up ! hehehehehe
30 mph cross winds and it realy isn't that bit a deal ? thats saying alot ! but some how I think perhaps your a'coupple of hours ahead of me in flyin' time O'l friend ! ...just don't think i'ed have that easy of a time at it !

heheheheh
thanks for your input at least I know it can be done ! HAHHAA !

Howdy Birdy
Landin has always been the fun part for me.
When I picked up the little machine from Chuck Irby, he had wot was left of a tandem in his shead.
I asked him wot happined to it and he told me an instructor was teaching him to do a xwind landing.
Well he landed it on it Port side, but no one was hurt except Chuck's feelins and his pockit book.
Would you describe your xwind landing technique?
Cheers
Sonny

Good advice mate. Thats is the way I had it figgered, just wanted to hear it from someone with the real life experance.
Birdy, I am a man that can exept responsablity for my mistakes so I would never hold you or anyone else here to blame for my shortcomings, becaouse I know your only trying to help, but on the other hand I will praise you loudly for the help.
I am going to ROC next week end and will take lots of pix for Y'all, most importantly I am gunna get an hour or so dual while I'm there.

Geee I wonder what Birdy said ??? hehehe sounded interesting , must'a sent it directly to sonny !
ComeON Birdy ! don't keep us in suspense ! I wann'a know what you do too anyone that can run toe to toe with a stubern cow in a gyro has to have something on the ball ! or something loose in the head , but thats another debate ! some day we'll all debate Birdys Sanity , but not right now !

hehehehehhehe

C ya !

Nope, Bob .... birdy must have deleted his reply ..... sometimes people misconstrue what people say ... I'd say birdy doesn't want to see some inexperienced pilot trying to do a maneuver he isn't ready for ....

Better safe than sorry Birdy. These days its way to dangerous for specific advice to be given to a general audience. Somebody out there will stuff it up and then out comes the harsh words with legal eagles...... You know it doesn't seem that long ago that if you made a mistake, you took it on the chin and accepted responcibility for your actions. Now days everyone wants to blame someone else for the simplist f###ups.

He's a wild man................... with pride, mebe we need more of um ay.
He actualy rang me , laughing his head off while try'n to tell me how he'd stuffed it up.[ and he still got the cause wrong]. :headache:

catchin up on the readings........saw this one, prompts me to this..........

Most, pilots this day and age, get trained in a 2 seater by an instructor.......if that's you and you are unsure how to tackle x winds etc etc....go back to the instructor and demand a refund, as you have not been trained.

Into wind, downwind,x wind, no wind, wot ever.............you should have been tawt

Hmmm... for someone who said " he was busy with Mum"...... you're spending way too much time here or are you just catching your breath?

Gent's
Just so you know, I do intend on taking training, after I get the little gyro built.

Russ
IF I do get to come to Australia for the Nats, I hope you can spend a little time with me aswell.

I just dont want to find my self ina lurch like Chuck did. So I figger asking questions is a good thing, especially from some one who routinely gets in a tight spot. Gives a bloke something to think about, and practice in his minds eye.

Despite having a bit of expereince, I regard X wind [30 mph] takeoffs as one of the most trying . Unless you do it right, you could well be in trouble as unless the gyro is at flying speed, once your main wheels leave the ground, you are committed to keep flying!!

Never try anything unless you feel okay about it and always work up into something. I spent many hours takeing off and landing in absolutely no wind, getting that right before I tried even a mild X cross wind !!
