Noticed an add in the latest GN for the above seats , buyers beware - I have two that both leak fuel around the outlet fittings . Drained the fuel for a third time tonight to try again to seal them up :evil2: .
If that doesnt work they will be going to the tip & I'll be giving Gerry a ring ........

Hey Echo,
Dont 'tip' it. Minty gives advice on how to seal em up. Reckons that was an old prob that he now has under control....I dunno! But I'd buy one off you if you bring it to wangaratta.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Rotor,
rang Mr. Minty last night - the first thing he said was that I must have used a big shifter & 3' of pipe to do up the fittings  !! yeah right :moon:
Muz gave me a remedy that I will try this arvo .
Mitch - I will probably take the back seat out anyhow & upgrade it to a 70 ltre Goodwin tank , so I can bring one down to Wangaratta , if you want I can bring the custom seat cover I had made up for it ( but you will have " Rotor Ute " in big red letters across it ...... look in the pic )

Echo,
Had occassion to speak with Ted Minty over the phone many moons ago, It was interesting to say the least.
Apparently he used to have a lot of trouble with his tanks, told me it had all been sorted re-modified/whatever. End result was that there was supposed to be a fix for the existing fault. How true or correct that is I am unsure.
We went on to discuss the Australian Gyro Co and push/pull cables etc. I tried to buy a set of cables of him but had to buy the gyro with it. Mr Minty thought I was a bit strange in the head, when I explained I was bringing in a Butterfly. CLT was just a bunch of BooHaa! and gyros should only been constructed with the pilot dragging his ass along the tarmac and Rusty's (famous muster with big hrs, ???) multiple thousands of hrs should be proof enough that all the new stuff is just a bunch of poop.
Mate if you dont get it sorted and you pull it out, I'll buy the seat tank and cover off you. I reckon it will look real swish as most all of my decals and graphics are red. I'm pretty sure Allan did a Minty conversion on his Monarch, either that or a Tommy Milton 7.5 gallon ex US. If you have the room, I'll buy them, bring them down Echo.
Cheers

Eric,
This might be a stupid question to ask a bush mechanic like you, but... have you tried the soap??
Best sealant for leaky tanks I know of - in the bush anyway.
Cheers,
Nick.

I hope your not referring to his pommy heritage and his personal hygiene habits?

I have a similar seat tank with much the same problems.
I tried the product Black Max, three times and then gave up. :anger:
Paid Gerry Goodwin a handfull of cash and didn't have another problem.

Hi All,
A produt that I have found very helpful with leaky things is called "LOXEAL ENGINEERING ADHEASIVES" 58:11 which is for threaded high pressure gas and liquids joints. Approved by the Australian Gas Association. No 5048 for working pressure up to 2600 Kpa. Approvals for Gas:DVGW, LPA-AGA, OXYGEN-BAM, POTABLE WATER: WRAS.
On the back of the tube it is stated that it is suitable for Hydrocabons and oils as well.
It is available from any reputiable plumbing supplier like Reece or Trade Link as example.
Australia and New Zealand Representive is BROMIC Pty Ltd.
The cost of the 100ml container I got was $18.00 or there abouts.
Hope this info is of use to you all.
I don't go no where with out it in my toolbox, just tooo handy.

Had not heard this one. Just place it on the thread? How long does it last? Is it a quick fix or can you rely on it?

Graham,
Most usually used when you get a hole in a petrol tank. Scrape the area clean with a knife and push the soap into the hole, it reacts with the petrol and goes hard as, seals the hole off. My brother told me of it after he returned from an around Oz trip, he had to use it a couple of times and as far as I know they´re still there.
I´m not so sure about how it would go around a thread into a plastic tank, might be worth a try but I´d be cleaning out the fuel line immediately after due to the caustic substances in the soap - it eats carburettors and the like.
I´d be careful with the loxseal as it may contain methacrylic resin, which eats plastic. IF this happens then the tapping would flog out and the fuel would leak around it, funny considering there is only about 2´ of head on the fitting. An old favourite in the fuel industry is STAG, but it usually goes on metal pipes, not plastic ones.
I think some of the problem could be attributable to the hose not being secured back onto the tank when it comes off the fuel tapping, so I would encourage anyone to loop the connection back onto the tank mounting bolts to make it so the hose - no matter how flexible it is - does not tug on the tapping.
One thing to be mindful of with plastic seat tanks is the fact of plastic having a much greater coefficient of expansion than the metal fittings we screw into the tank for our hose barb connection, the plastic may swell around the metal and allow a leak, so the sealant we use must be flexible and not set hard. Use of a plastic barb should eliminate this, though what I think Mr Fuel Tank manufacturer should do is provide a ready made barb in the construction of the seat, preferably housed into a rebate so it is protected from obvious damage, but that may be too much trouble for him at this stage.
Hope this helps..
Nick.
Just toss the mother %$#@ into the dump, get a "Goodwin" tank, prob fixed. :peace:
